BERLIN, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Nils Petersen's sole goal helped Freiburg to flabbergast ten-men Borussia Monchengladbach 1-0 at the curtain raiser of the 30th round in Bundesliga on Friday.
The "Foals" missed the chance to put pressure on the top three after Freiburg secured all three points against the run of the game on home soil.
Monchengladbach started brightly in the game and pressed Freiburg into defense from the start.
Freiburg's goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow had to work at full stretch as Florian Neuhaus unleashed a promising effort before Alassane Plea and Lars Stindl came close in quick succession.
The visitors thought they got rewarded at the half-hour mark but Neuhaus' goal following a rebound was ruled offside.
Christian Streich's men showed vital signs after the restart as Robin Koch's hammer missed the target just wide in the 49th minute.
As the match progressed, Freiburg assumed control and punished wasteful Monchengladbach in the 59th minute when substitute Petersen nodded home the opener with his first touch of the ball.
Monchengladbach were stunned and things went from bad to worse nine minutes later as Plea received his marching orders for his second bookable offence.
The dismissal took the wind out of the visitor's sails meanwhile Freiburg should have doubled their advantage but custodian Yann Sommer defused Lucas Holer's header on target in the closing stages.
With the win, Freiburg stay on the 8th place whereas Monchengladbach continue on the 4th spot of the standings.
"It is always difficult against Freiburg. We played very well in the first half but did not manage to score. The goal against changed the momentum in the second half," Monchengladbach's Patrick Herrmann said.
The following fixtures are scheduled for Saturday: Bayer Leverkusen host front runners Bayern Munich, runner up Borussia Dortmund clash with Hertha Berlin, Fortuna Dusseldorf face Hoffenheim, Eintracht Frankfurt see Mainz and third placed Leipzig encounter bottom side Paderborn.
